Maybe you’ve got debt on a few cards and have been thinking about consolidating them into one but aren’t quite sure of the ins and outs. Where Do Credit Cards Come From?

Pitt St Mall

I work in Sydney, literally in the heart of the city and Sydney is by far the biggest working hub in Australia. It’s also pretty much one of the major cities in the world and often sees itself in the top 10 most liveable cities in the world. It has everything that you can imagine including the Sydney opera House and the Harbour Bridge. On New Year’s Eve Sydney hosts an amazing fireworks display and the city fills with celebrations that need to be experienced at least once in your lifetime.

The Problem of Minimum Payments

minimum payment problems

Credit cards are a powerful purchasing tool that must be managed correctly to prevent undue financial hardship. Most cardholders open a credit card account with the intention of paying the balance in full each month, but then an unexpected event occurs. The first time a balance is carried over, the debtor realizes that the minimum payment is an option that will leave some slack in the budget. A dangerous road lies ahead if the balance remains outstanding and minimum payments are made. Some of the most obvious perils include:

An Analysis of Australian Attitudes to Credit Cards

credit card attitudes

I was given the task on writing a blog on Aussie credit card sentiment. I started with my usual forms of research, but sadly wasn’t having much luck. My boyfriend suggested doing a quick Vox pop (i.e. mini survey) to gather people’s thoughts and so this blog was born! I felt this was a more reliable and interesting take on how Aussies feel about credit, debt and their cards. It also gives a more home-grown feel than having to rely on Bank PR releases or their research, which at times can be a bit sterile and sometimes seem hard to relate to.

I hit the streets (or rather my email address book!) and asked a range of people four simple questions to ascertain their feelings on credit, and to get feedback on the credit cards themselves.

Credit Card of the Month: June 2011

credit card of the month june 2011

It’s that time of the month again when we nominate a card as the best. Last month (May 2011) it was the Citibank Clear Platinum credit card, which had a great balance transfer rate and rewards. For June we’ve got a card with a shorter balance transfer rate, but a fantastically low interest rate on purchases. Credit Card Compare’s credit card of the month for June 2011 is none other than the Bank of Queensland Low Rate Visa. Here’s why we chose it.

Consumer Protection: Debit vs. Credit Cards

surveillance camera

Debit Cards have many merits. You can use them just about anywhere you can use a credit card and they keep you out of debt by only allowing you to use money you actually have in your linked account. A question many consumers have, however, is whether they’re as safe to use in certain situations, such as online shopping. A lot of credit cards have purchase insurances and protection giving the consumer peace of mind if anything goes wrong – like if the item they bought online never shows up, they’re covered. Can the same be said of debit cards?

Junk Mail: The Bane of My Existence

junk mail

If you’re anything like me, you’re probably sick of coming home from a hard day’s work, opening your letterbox and being virtually crushed under the weight of impersonal advertising (for things you don’t even want or need)! Credit card deals, new car deals, real estate, catalogues, cosmetics, lotto (that you never win anyway!), holidays. Who has time to sift through it all and how did we get on these mailing lists anyway? Most of these paper-wasting envelopes end up in the bin and it sure would be nice to have some control over what goes into our letterboxes, save some trees and enjoy one less thing to do in our busy lives.
