Citibank are one of the biggest credit card issuers in Australia, and much of that success has been built on the back of their balance transfer card offers. Although Citibank do cater to the customer who is looking to save as much as possible, they also provide offers that are suitable for the person who wants a little more from their card, e.g. rewards points, cash back and frequent flyer miles. However, it’s their low interest rates on balance transfers that are most attractive, especially if you want to save as much money as possible. More About Citibank Balance Transfers
Traditionally, Citibank are very strong in terms of their balance transfer offers. While most Australian banks have balance transfer offer cards, Citibank’s rates often beat them both in terms of their low interest rates and longer promotional durations. In fact, while other banks offer a low interest rate for 6 months on balance transfers, Citibank may have a 0% offer for 6 months. So it’s really worth your time shopping around, because you will save money!
How to Transfer a Balance to Citibank
By far the easiest way to transfer an existing balance, or multiple balances, is while applying for a new account. It may also work out to be significantly cheaper as transferring a balance once the account has been opened may incur a fee.
The application process, as is the case with other banks, is easy: it’s just a form to fill out. It won’t take long either. Gather together all the details you’ll need before starting the application. When you’re transferring a balance it’s best to be as precise as possible, so have your latest statement at hand.
When you are filling out the form, there is a section dedicated to detailing what you intend on transferring. You can transfer the whole of your existing balance, or a nominal amount: the decision is yours. If you have more than one card and want to consolidate your debts onto your new Citibank card, then you can add their details to your application. Keep it in mind that there is a limit to how much you can transfer, which is usually a percentage of your credit limit. The order in which you add balances to the form is the order they will be transferred to your new account, which may be important in terms of monthly payments. If you have any accounts that are in default, Citibank will not transfer the balance.
Can You Transfer a Balance From Another Citibank Card?
The short answer to this is no, you can’t. This is typical among all banks as the promotional balance transfer offer is intended to attract new customers. Citibank also power other credit cards such as those from BoQ, Suncorp, CUA and IMB. Therefore, you probably will not be able to transfer a balance from one of their cards to a Citibank card.
After You’ve Consolidated to Citibank
Once your new account is set up and the transfer has gone through, you’ll need to decide whether you should close your old card or keep it open. Citibank will not close any of the existing accounts from which you transferred a balance.
