If you’re looking for an entry-level frequent flyer credit card, want to score a bunch of bonus Qantas points up front and dodge paying an annual fee then this could be a great option.
Pros
There’s no annual fee which is really good for a frequent flyer credit card, as usually there’s a fee to pay! The QFF points bonus on offer is almost enough to pay for a short flight from Sydney to Melbourne or the like or could be put to great use in upgrading to business class on a long haul flight. The ongoing points earning ratio is a really healthy 1 Qantas Frequent Flyer Point for each $1 spent. There’s also no points limit which means that you can earn as many points as dollars you can afford to spend.
Another great thing is that the minimum income required is quite low and its not out of reach for self-employed people who can prove that they’ve been working for a while.
Cons
If you’re planning on using the Qantas American Express Discovery Card for your everyday spending in retail stores etc you’ll probably run into surcharges which take the shine off the value of your Qantas points. And, unlike some of the other Qantas linked credit cards that offer bonus points for signing up, the Qantas Amex Discovery Card makes cardholders jump through a few hoops to get the bonus points such as spending on the card within the first 3 months (which you would probably do anyway) and purchasing selected Qantas products and services in Australia.
Conclusion
The Qantas American Express Discovery Card is a frequent flyer card and so it almost goes without saying that its best suited for people who buy flights at least once every year. If you’re looking to sign up for a frequent flyer card but want to avoid paying the high annual fee then this is a decent choice.
