The Virgin High Flyer credit card will get you travelling cheaper and faster with a points earning rate of 2.5 Velocity Points per $1 spent. It has all the best features that credit cards have to offer in terms of convenience, security and features, and whilst it has a higher price tag than other cards, there are plenty of benefits and rewards to be reaped.
Pros
You’ll get 4 free domestic flights a year for you and a friend, every year with Virgin Australia. All you need to do is cover the credit card booking fees. Of course flights are subject to availability and some conditions do apply.
Aside from the rewards program, there are many benefits to this card. You’ll enjoy a low balance transfer rate for the first 6 months, which can help you to consolidate your debts into one place and pay it off faster.
As a cardholder, you’ll receive complimentary travel insurance for you and your family when you book with your card and access to your very own Visa Platinum Concierge Service, which is practically like having a personal assistant on hand to book flights, hotels, restaurants or a good dry cleaner if you’re far from home. You’ll enjoy 50% off Virgin Australia in-flight entertainment, Virgin 'Family Benefits’ (exciting offers to products) and Visa Front Line Access (assuring you access to the best seats at entertainment and sporting events, before tickets even go on sale to the public). If you’re in and out of airports a lot, you’ll appreciate the Airport SpeedPass, which is automatically yours as well. This will mean fast-tracked, hassle free everything for you at the airport.
Additionally, as a Visa Credit Card holder you can use your card at over 20 million locations worldwide. You’ll enjoy complimentary extended warranty insurance and complimentary purchase cover insurance. This can provide the peace of mind you’re after in your shopping experience.
Lastly security is priority. With the Virgin High Flyer Credit Card you are protected by Fraudshield, Visa’s irregular transaction detection system, Visa’s Zero Liability policy, advanced online security, no fuss, quick replacement for lost or stolen cards, assistance when you need it, 24/7 and state of the art secure chip technology.
Cons
The downsides of this card are few and far between. Purchase and cash advance rates are reasonably high, but if you don’t make any cash withdrawals and always pay off your balance on time, this is of no concern for you. The $249 p.a. annual fee is also high but you could easily save yourself more than the fee if you’re a regular traveller and a reasonably high spender. Additional card holders will cost you an extra $89 p.a., but again, for all the added points earning potential you could gain, it could well be worth it.
You do have to spend a lot to earn rewards, as good as the earn rate is. Also, keep in mind that just because you are offered ‘4 free flights per year’ doesn’t mean they will always be available when and where you want them.
Conclusion
For this card to be of maximum use to you, you’d want to be a regular traveller whose spending per month is quite high. Would you actually use 4 free domestic flights for you and a friend per year? Would you spend enough on the card to earn yourself some rewards? Can you regularly pay off your balance? If this is not the case for you, the card will probably just cost you and won’t be worth your while.
