The Westpac Earth Gold credit card account comes with two credit cards, (American Express and MasterCard) and is the perfect companion for anyone who spends regularly on their credit card. With no cap on the amount of points you can earn, it’s only a matter of time before you’re heading off on a trip courtesy of Westpac. For a full review of this card’s features, read on.

    Pros

Westpac have teamed up with Qantas, allowing you to earn 1 Qantas Frequent Flyer point for every $1 spent on the Earth Gold American Express card and 0.5 point for every $1 spent using the MasterCard. There is no limit to the number of points you can earn, and, unlike other reward schemes, there are no tier levels, meaning you can start redeeming points straightaway!

The Westpac Earth Gold credit card is fast and convenient and comes with MaterCard’s PayPass system, allowing you to pay for items under $100 by simply tapping your card on a reader. Shopping with this card is a breeze.

If you like to shop online you’ll also be pleased to know that the Westpac Earth Gold credit card also comes with MasterCard’s SecureCode technology, which further protects cardholders from online credit card fraud.

This card also comes with complimentary insurance, including free overseas travel insurance for trips up to 3 months long, purchase security insurance cover for 3 months and extended warranty insurance cover for up to 12 months.

If you want to switch the Westpac Earth Gold credit card, you can also take advantage of the low 0.99% p.a. interest rate offer on balances transferred for a period of 6 months.

    Cons

The Westpac Earth Gold card is a jack-of-all-trades. The reward scheme isn’t as generous as other credit cards on the market, which may be a problem if you don’t regularly spend on your card. Similarly, the rates, although good, aren’t brilliant. There’s no introductory purchase rate and no interest free balance transfers.

There is, however, a 45 day interest free period on purchases so long as you pay of you balance in full at the end of each month, if not account holders are subject to 19.99% p.a. interest rate.

    Summary

The Westpac Earth Gold credit card is stuck in the middle between a rewards credit card and a low rate card. If you’re a heavy spender then consider opting for a card that offers a better purchase rate and a better rate of return when it comes to reward points.

If, however, you spend occasionally on your credit card and want to accrue points over time, then the Earth Gold account is perfect. There’s no cap on the amount of points you can save, so you can continue saving up points, year after year, and then redeem them for something extra special. It is worth noting that the Westpac Earth Gold account comes with a $125 p.a. annual account management fee, which is fairly reasonable when you consider the added benefits such as free travel insurance cover.
