When I mention that special day in November, what comes immediately to mind?
If you’re thinking fascinators, horses and images of drunken Melbournians splashed across the nightly news, you might want to stop reading now.
However, if you’re already positively drooling at the thought of the next 29-hour long online shopping binge that is Click Frenzy, then you’re most definitely in the right place.
Click Frenzy will be held on the 12th of November, exactly one week after the Melbourne Cup. We have put together this guide to help you maximise your Click Frenzy experience.
The rise and rise of online shopping
Did you know that in 2018, Australians spent a total of $28.6 billion on online shopping? Together with online department stores seeing growth of 29.6% in 2018, those numbers are only going to increase.
Our article about the biggest shopping days of the year has proven to be one of our most popular, and with Christmas fast approaching we want to help you get the most out of your online shopping.
So, let’s go shopping!
What is Click Frenzy?
Inspired by the US shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Click Frenzy first launched in Australia in November 2012 as a 24-hour sale. The sale guarantees customers massive discounts on thousands of products across a range of well-known brands and retailers.
Australians were excited and sat with their credit cards at the ready!
However, despite all the major brands involved and promises that the website was well equipped to handle all the expected traffic, the site crashed and was out of action for most of the night.
Not exactly the best start.
There was, of course, some backlash from the public and the hashtag #clickfail started to trend on Twitter. The next day, when Click Frenzy co-founder Grant Arnott fronted the media, there were some suggestions the whole thing was a scam to collect consumer data.
It wasn’t, and a few retailers actually reported increased traffic to their sites because some shoppers simply side-stepped the Click Frenzy site and shopped with the online retailers directly.
The towel was not thrown in because the event continued, and by 2017 there were:
- 568 retailers officially involved in the event
- 2.5 million shoppers shopping
- 5.6 million clicks to Australian retail websites
- Corporate partners included Australia Post, American Express and Afterpay.
In fact, according to the Australia Post Inside Australian Online Shopping report, in 2018:
‘The week of Click Frenzy was the second largest shopping event and the fifth-largest week by volume… Variety Stores and Fashion purchases accounted for over 65% of the total, with almost equal share between them.’
Yep, Click Frenzy is here to stay.

How do I grab myself a bargain?
Remember how we suggested you subscribe to Click Frenzy? Yeah, you should do that. Like now.
Well, in previous sales, over the course of the 29-hour event, subscribers received emails telling them what special deals were on, when, and most importantly, where. While exact times aren’t given, you’ll get links. I’m sure you won’t be surprised to know that the numbers of items available are limited, so once they’re sold, that’s it. They’re all gone.
Again, remember how I said there were 2.5 million shoppers in 2017? How long do you think a $4 Xbox is going to last with even just a fraction of those 2.5 million people wanting it?
We’re talking literal seconds. The average time a special item lasts is 30 seconds.
So, it’s really important you subscribe, plan, and check your emails regularly to make sure you don’t miss out on the special deal you’ve been waiting for.
Oh, and yes, the $4 Xbox was a real, actual deal in 2018. So was the 55” 4K TV for $10.
Some of the deals from last year include:
- Dell had a 50% sale on laptops, desktops, monitors and gaming PCs.
- Microsoft was discounting Razer Gaming PC’s by $1100.
- A gaming site had a 97% discount on games.
- Cellarmasters was offering a 50% discount on selected wines.
- Pretty Little Thing was offering up to 70% off dresses, tops, knitwear, shorts, skirts, lingerie, shoes, swimwear and accessories.
- Boohoo had 40% off everything!
And it’s all there for the taking. You just have to be ready.
Can I use my cashback site or rewards credit card?
Rewards credit cards
If you already have your rewards credit card, just go ahead and use it. Double-dip those benefits like it’s only weeks till Christmas!
If you don’t have one yet, you’ve got a few weeks till the sale starts, so, if you get moving you should have your new card in your hands before then.
There are terms and conditions for some Click Frenzy offers that won’t allow you to always get cashback offers at the same time as the discount. However, if you’ve allowed your cashback browser extension to track your browsing, it’ll let you know if you can use it or not. Just give it a go and see what happens.
