Decent rewards, but AmEx surcharges a hurdle

Reviewed and not recommended by Jonathan on 03 Apr 2017

With this card you can accumulate reward points relatively quickly and fairly easily by shopping at major supermarkets and petrol stations. The rewards points are also increased for shopping at David Jones, but the benefit is reduced by the fact most products at the store are sold for inflated prices.

American Express is still rejected, or accepted with a significant surcharge, at many outlets and websites, which reduces the card’s convenience.

Overall it’s a pretty good card, even taking into account the reasonably steep annual fee.

Points, points, points

Reviewed and recommended by Jae on 04 Dec 2016

The best thing I like about this card is that you can use your points to pay off your account. This means I can spend all year and effectively pay for Christmas. The one thing I like the least is that not all stores accept American Express. However, more stores are coming around.

I get 3 points for every dollar for just buying groceries and petrol (which I have to anyway) at Coles or Woolworths.

I have found this card to be practical and the customer service to be always helpful.

The rewards system is fantastic

Reviewed and recommended by Jordan on 25 Sep 2016

I signed up in-store and it was absolutely amazing! I was given 30,000 bonus points for signing up, which I could convert to account credit ($200), a gift card ($200) or use them as Qantas points. I could even use the promotion points to pay the $99 annual fee and still receive $100 for myself.

Interest rate is higher than I'd like

Reviewed and not recommended by Fernando on 23 Sep 2016

The American Express David Jones Credit Card is international credit card not accepted an many shops because they charge more on transactions. All the time I need to ask if Amex is accepted when I go to new shops. As well, we pay high interest every month.

The interest rate is too high

Reviewed and recommended by Marilynna on 20 Sep 2016

I think the interest rate on credit cards is too high, as it keeps going up all the time. When I got this credit card the interest rate was reasonable. Now it’s gone up and up, so I am paying so much in interest and fees that I have to think twice if it’s worth having.

High rates, not accepted everywhere

Reviewed and not recommended by Billel on 19 Aug 2016

I had this card originally to gather a few points in order to use on shopping or buying gifts for people, but turned out to use it more than what it was intended. Rates are quite high however, and it is a little inconvenient with some places not accepting the card.

Happy

I have had this card for about 5 years and have been very, very happy with its performance. I have not had one problem and I use this card pretty much every day of the week for small and large purchases.

Fees are too high, not happy anymore

Reviewed and not recommended by Rose on 23 Jun 2016

I am not happy with high fees any more. I need a versatile card that saves me money, a card with no hidden fees, low interest, but awesome rewards. I’d also like no annual fees, and the ability for everyone in the family to benefit from the rewards. Wouldn’t hurt if low income earners could get it too.

Good card: Rewards and excellent customer service

Reviewed and recommended by Frank on 09 Sep 2015

The David Jones American Express card is a good all round card and offers reasonable rewards without the fees being too high as we pay the balance off each month.

The customer service, whenever we have needed it has been excellent. The only drawback we have found is that some places do not accept American Express.

Good everyday AmEx with benefits

Reviewed and recommended by Peter on 19 Jul 2015

This card was easy to get, and with two different rewards options. The DJ rewards points sign up offer means your first annual fee is paid. It’s widely accepted, DJ likes you with it, and you have the backing of AmEx. The card gives great confidence when travelling overseas with the wide network of AmEx offices and foreign exchange services.
