Our review

Our review of the Bankwest Breeze MastercardReviewed by Yvonne Taylor

Get one of the best balance transfer offers around – in two ways – when you apply for the Bankwest Breeze Mastercard.

6 months at 0% balance transfers

You can transfer a balance from your existing card or cards, and pay no interest on the balance for 6 months.

A six-month balance transfer at 0% may help you save if you are currently paying around 20% p.a. on overdue debt on your existing card.

9.90% p.a. is both the balance transfer revert rate and the low ongoing purchases interest rate

After 6 months, when the introductory zero-interest balance transfer offer has expired, you’ll still have a card which charges interest on purchases at the lower end of the scale. Having a low-rate credit card in your wallet can be very useful if your finances are unpredictable. Paying 9.90% p.a. on your purchases balance is much more manageable than paying the 20% p.a., or more, charged by some cards.

And if you can’t quite manage to repay all of your transferred balance after 6 months, you’ll also appreciate the fact that the revert interest rate is one of Bankwest’s lowest.

But 21.99% cash advance rate is among the highest

However, since this card’s cash advance interest rate is 21.99% p.a., Bankwest are certainly not encouraging you to take cash advances, and that’s not a bad thing. Credit card cash advances are a really dangerous way to manage your finances because there are never any interest-free days on cash advances. You’ll be slugged with high interest charges from the day you take your advance until the day you repay it.

Up to 55 days interest free, not 44

You can start taking advantage of the monthly interest-free days (even if you have ongoing balance transfer) and you’ll be pleased to know that you’ll get up to 55 of them each month, not the less generous 44 days allowed by some other cards. That adds up to an extra 132 days every year for your cash to remain in your savings or mortgage offset account.

Up-to-date technology

Not only is the card enabled for Apple Pay and Google Pay™, you can log into the Bankwest app to access and activate your card digitally before it arrives in the mail.

But there’s more. If you’d rather pay with something even smaller than your phone, you can apply for a Bankwest Halo payment ring, which, as the name implies, you wear on your finger and knock onto the payment terminal. There’s a one-off set-up fee to pay, $39 at the time of writing this review. Eligibility criteria, T&Cs apply.

Low credit limits available

This card has a low minimum credit limit of $1,000, which means that you can reduce the exposure to temptation that comes with a higher limit you may not need or want. In fact, if you’re approved for a limit of $6,000 or more, you’re likely to be steered towards the more expensive Bankwest Platinum Breeze Mastercard. So if you just want a low limit, make your preference clear when you apply, and stick to your guns.

You don’t need to live in WA

You don’t need to be a resident of Western Australia to benefit from owning a Bankwest Breeze Mastercard. Bankwest is a subsidiary of Commonwealth Bank, and although its branches and ATMs are all located in WA, you can manage your account via online banking or the mobile app.

And you don’t need to do your regular banking with Bankwest in order to have one of its credit cards.

Moderate annual fee, free first year

The annual fee of $79 is not unreasonable for a fuss-free card which still promises a low interest rate on purchases when the introductory offers expire. And to encourage you to try the card for size, you won’t be asked to pay an annual fee for the first 12 months.

There’s no extra charge for up to three supplementary cards on the account.

Competing low interest rate cards

It’s not too easy to find another card with this combination of a low ongoing interest rate, moderate annual fee and and an introductory rate on balance transfers. But if you browse the ‘Low interest’ credit cards in our Features section you’ll probably want to spend some time looking at the NAB Low Rate Card and the Virgin Money Low Rate Credit Card, as well as other cards which have at least some of the features you’re looking for.

Look beyond the introductory interest rates

Introductory interest rates don’t last forever, so don’t let them make you overlook the card’s other features. If you need some temporary wriggle room to sort out your debts, this card will help you now, but you can be confident that its ongoing low interest rate may also prove very useful if you find yourself in a similar situation in future.

Great service and very low interest

Reviewed and recommended by Jacqueline on 30 Apr 2017

The card is bright and easy to find in my wallet. The interest rates are low. The service is always great. I have never had any problems with this card or with this bank.

My card was hacked. They knew before did, and rang me straight away. Bankwest all the way!

No-frills, low bills, not for dills

Reviewed and recommended by Simone on 24 Sep 2016

This product consistently delivers a considerably lower interest rate on purchases, year after year. I have had the product for approximately 7 years.

The annual fee is fair, but nearing what I would deem unacceptable for a basic credit card facility with no rewards scheme.

I’ve titled that this card is “not for dills”,as to operate it without grief you must be organised to get your monthly payment (minimum or higher) to Bankwest on time, with payment being via BPAY only for those outside Western Australia with no access to branch payment. Bank@Post isn’t available. Similarly, when you need to do something out of the everyday, like changing a PIN (done only in select full service ATM’s), it can be difficult if you reside outside the Bankwest branch network.

Internet Banking facilities are good, and you are able to message their customer service team via secure messages with a good turnaround time to receive a real-person response.

Unlike other institutions I’ve experienced, Bankwest charge a late payment fee immediately — not a single day’s grace — and the fee is high at $25.

I would use this card most days

Reviewed and not recommended by Abbey on 20 Sep 2016

I am not sure if I would really recommend it, but you get it. It would be nice to have lower interest rates. If it had lower rates then I would probably recommend it. As it is, I might only give it a few more stars than it is worth.

Bankwest is just one of those banks that is average at everything it does.

My kind of bank

Bankwest is a good bank, The card has low Interest rates, and there is good customer service. Very professional, honest and it’s a West Australian bank which cares for its customers. Very honest and reliable. Bankwest has a good heritage and is very secure and will be around for a long time. My kind of bank, highly recommended.

Never lets me down

Reviewed and recommended by Josh on 13 Aug 2016

Bankwest is the best bank, offering the best cards and customer service. The Breeze MasterCard is easy to apply for at any Bankwest branch. The card is also accepted at every store I have ever bought from. I lost my card outside the vet clinic one day and it took less than three days to receive my new one in the mail. Amazing.

Balance transfer promo was a great start!

Reviewed and recommended by Candice on 09 Jun 2016

I wanted a low rate balance transfer card for a small debt. It was quick to apply, the staff were fantastic, and the fees excellent. From my dealings with BankWest so far, I am now thinking of transferring all of my accounts across to them. I can access my account through all Commonwealth banks and online banking is easy. I would recommend this balance transfer card to anyone.

Missed a local branch

Reviewed and recommended by Peter on 29 Oct 2014

I found the inconvenience of not being able to go to a branch and discuss any issues I might be having as the most irritating aspect of having this card. Recently I was under a little financial stress and asked for assistance, which was given by reducing my interest rate to just under 10 percent. When I asked for the same offer as a balance transfer i.e. zero percent I was denied even tough I had been a customer for many years and never defaulted. Poor form.

Very happy with it

Reviewed and recommended by Lauren on 09 Oct 2014

I am very happy with this credit card. Not sure if I get rewards for using it – if I do that will make it even better. Was easy to apply for and customer service has always been really great – friendly & helpful. Would definitely recommend this credit card to anyone else.

A good tool if used correctly

Reviewed and recommended by Charmars on 20 Oct 2013

Since I never experience late fees for I use my card only where I cannot use cash or E.F.P.O.S. and clear card as soon as I use it, or before the end of the month. In this way I don’t incur any charges at all, so I am well pleased with my MasterCard.

We really like this card

We really like this card because of the interest rate which is very low and have been very happy with the fees. When we have contacted the bank, customer service have always been friendly and helpful. Like the convenience of the card as its accepted everywhere in store and online. We would recommend it.
