Our review

Our review of the Bankwest Qantas MastercardReviewed by Yvonne Taylor

Most credit cards earning Qantas Frequent Flyer points assume that the cardholder will also be interested in complimentary insurance policies, covering travel or major purchases, or in most cases both. These 'free’ policies inevitably find their way into the bank’s cost calculations when it comes to setting the annual fee. But Bankwest have taken a completely different approach with their refreshingly straightforward Bankwest Qantas Mastercard. You can earn Qantas points on everyday purchases for a relatively low annual fee because the card is not encumbered with insurance policies you may never use.

$100 p.a. annual fee and 0.5 pts per $1 spent, capped

There’s no point in pretending that 0.5 pts per $1 spent, capped at 50,000 points per year, is a stellar rate. But you will struggle to find a better combination of reasonable annual fee, moderate earning rate and relatively unrestricted capping. Cards with higher earning rates tend to be weighed down with platinum benefits and a consequently prohibitive annual fee. Cards with an annual fee in the $80-$100 range usually have more restrictive capping and may have an even lower points earning rate.

Annual points cap is more manageable than a monthly one

Many cards with points earning caps express the cap in terms of a monthly restriction, for example a cap of 3,000 points per month, beyond which no further points can be earned until the start of the next billing cycle. But an annual cap, like this Bankwest one, allows you to spread the effect of major purchases, or quarterly bills, over the whole year. So not only is the cap higher than comparable cards with a 3,000 points per month cap, it’s also far less limiting.

Qantas Frequent Flyer joining fee waived

If you have previously been deterred by the prospect of paying $99.50 in order to become a Qantas Frequent Flyer, Bankwest have removed this barrier for you. They will pay the joining fee on your behalf.

Lots of Qantas points redemption options

To get the best value from your Qantas points, you’ll want to use them for award flights and seat upgrades with Qantas, Jetstar, and their partner airlines. Long-haul flights and premium seats deliver a particularly good return on points expenditure. However, there are plenty of other options available at the Qantas online store, including:

  • Homewares, electronics, fashion, wine and food, toys and more, from the merchandise catalogue
  • Hotel accommodation and car hire
  • Travel and entertainment experiences
  • Retail gift vouchers
  • Charity donations

Perth Arena discounts

Although Bankwest is based in WA, you don’t need to be a WA resident to have one of its credit cards since they have branches and ATMs in all states and territories, as well as online banking and a mobile app.

But if you do happen to live in Perth, or visit there regularly, you’ll be able to take advantage of a 10% food and beverage discount at Perth Arena, Backstage Lounge access and ticket competitions and giveaways.

Low-interest balance transfer offer

If you need one more benefit to sway your decision, the low interest balance transfer could help you make up your mind. Although it’s not a 0% offer, the prospect of paying only 2.99% p.a. for nine months on the transferred amount, with no upfront transfer fee, could be tempting.

You’ll need to avoid the high revert interest rate of 20.49% p.a. (the ongoing purchases interest rate) by repaying the debt in full before the expiry of the nine-month introductory offer period.

Manageable low credit limit available

Some credit cards have high minimum credit limits, exposing you to more spending temptation than you are comfortable with. But with this card you can opt for a limit as low as $1,000.

Only 44 interest-free days

'Only’ is a relative term in this context, since up to 44 interest-free days on purchases is clearly a great cost-free way to postpone payment. It’s just that it’s not quite as generous as some cards with up to 55 interest-free days on purchases. Those missing 11 days add up to paying 132 days earlier every year.

Remember that you won’t qualify for any interest-free days at all if you have an outstanding purchases balance or balance transfer.

Compare other Qantas Frequent Flyer points cards

Our dedicated Qantas cards comparison page is a great way to evaluate the features of the available QFF cards. Simply go to our 'Features’ section and select 'Qantas’ under 'Earn points’.

When comparing cards, don’t forget to check the points earning rate against the annual fee and any points cap or threshold that applies.

Low-cost way to get started as a QFF points collector

This card’s low annual fee combined with a moderate earning rate, generous points cap (allowing annual card spending of $100,000 before any points potential is forfeited) and waived QFF joining fee, makes it an ideal way to begin collecting Qantas Frequent Flyer points.

Simple, straightforward card

Reviewed and recommended by Bill on 01 Oct 2016

I have never had any trouble with this card, and when you want to dispute a payment, or get a return for goods or services not being what they should be, the process is reasonably good.

There are no fees, no interest and no rewards. It’s a simple, straightforward card and you know what you’re getting.

Extremely happy with this credit card

Reviewed and recommended by Gary on 01 Jul 2016

I have been a customer of Bankwest for almost a year now and could not be more impressed. Whenever I visit a branch, the staff are always willing to offer their assistance and are very prompt to get what I need done. The features and benefits of this credit card far surpass that of other credit cards in its class. One of the best things I like about it is the fact that I am a Qantas Frequent Flyer member. Being able to benefit from QFF points as well as using my credit card is why I continue my business.

I earn good flybuys points

Reviewed and recommended by Anon on 20 Jun 2015

I changed from my previous card because it was of no benefit and with this card I at least earn points as I use it nearly every day, can use it everywhere, and because it has PayPass it’s really easy to use. I like the colour of the card – it makes it easy to see in my wallet.
