Our review

Our review of the Bendigo Bank RSPCA MastercardReviewed by Yvonne Taylor

Animal lovers can now opt for a painless way to donate to the RSPCA without actually parting with any extra cash unless they choose to do so. It’s called the Bendigo Bank RSPCA Mastercard. It will help you support your favourite charity in two ways, with the bank donating a percentage of your purchase amounts and also allowing you to make an optional personal monthly donation.

In every other way it’s a basic credit card with standard features and a reasonably low annual fee.

A percentage of your spending goes to RSPCA Adoptapet

Bendigo Bank’s partnership with RSPCA started in 2005, and by using this Mastercard for your purchases you will effectively become a participant and contributor to this worthwhile cause.

Every time you use your card, the bank makes a donation to Adoptapet based on a percentage of your spending. The percentage is not identified, presumably because it may vary and may be quite small, but the fact is that the donation will be coming out of the bank’s pocket, not yours. And that small percentage, according to both Bendigo Bank and the RSPCA, has raised over $3 million in the last 12 years, and helped more than 480,000 animals find a new home.

Optional $5 monthly donation

If you want to take your support of the RSPCA even further, you can opt for an automatic $5 monthly donation to be charged to your card. It’s 'set and forget’, it’s tax deductible, and you’ll get a receipt for your total annual donation at the end of each financial year.

Personalise your card with your pet’s photo

Bendigo Bank normally charges a $10 fee for personalising your card, but with this particular card the service is free. Personalise your card with a photo of your own pet, or choose a pet photo – or, indeed any other design – from the bank’s online image gallery.

If you don’t want to personalise your card, you can still choose between a card featuring a cat or a dog.

Affordable annual fee covers the basics and more

The $45 p.a. annual fee covers the primary card and an unlimited number of supplementary cardholders. There are no rewards points or complimentary insurance policies included in your fee, but you will get the following features:

  • Up to 55 days on purchases provided you repay your balance in full every month
  • Tap & Go for purchases under $100 for speed and convenience at the checkout
  • Apple Pay, Google Pay™ and Samsung Pay all available if you want to pay with your phone
  • Mastercard Priceless Cities program for special offers and exclusive experiences in travel, dining, entertainment and leisure
  • A high level of security – 24/7 fraud monitoring and fraud money back guarantee
  • Mastercard’s wide acceptance – less likelihood of card refusal or surcharge

Predictable interest rates

The card’s interest rates are fairly typical, and are clearly not aimed at anyone who expects to run an unpaid balance for a long period, or take regular cash advances. They are:

  • Uncleared purchase balances: 19.99% p.a.
  • Cash advances: 21.99% p.a.

Comparable cards

There aren’t many charity-linked credit cards in Australia.

One other option is the Community First CU McGrath Pink Visa, where a portion of the annual fee is donated to the McGrath Foundation (funding breast cancer support nurses).

Alternatively, most rewards credit cards offer cardholders the opportunity to convert some of their reward points into a cash donation to charity, instead of using them for their own purposes. NAB rewards credit cards have the longest list of charity options.

You can compare available rewards cards by clicking the 'Features’ button at the top of this page, and selecting 'All rewards’ under 'Earn points’.

A card for animal lovers and socially conscious consumers

If you’re already buying free-range eggs and green electricity, this card offers you one more way to exercise your social conscience while you shop. It has no special bells and whistles other than the certainty that you will be improving the lives of unfortunate animals with every cent you spend.
