It’s not a credit card, but it feels like one. In fact, it’s more like a charge card, but able to be used only at the many outlets of a single supplier. It’s the Caltex StarCard and it gives its holders up to a month’s credit on fuel and other purchases – provided they pay their account balance in full at the end of the monthly billing cycle – plus significant discounts and Qantas Frequent Flyer points.
You must have an ABN to open a Caltex StarCard account
The Caltex StarCard is available to businesses of all sizes &ndash: you don’t need to be a large company with a fleet of vehicles. All you need is an ABN and at least six months trading history, so sole traders can apply for the card.
If you’re not running a business, individuals can still access fuel discounts (but nor Qantas Points) by using the Caltex StarCard Debit card.
Discounts on fuel purchases
Ongoing discounts on fuel purchases are available. Cardholders will qualify for:
If you fill up just one vehicle with 50 litres of premium fuel twice a month, you’re going to save $4 per month, or $48 per year.
Special extra discount for the first six months
New cardholders are eligible for an increased discount on premium fuels for the first six months of holding the card. During this period they will receive:
This introductory offer is not available to businesses that already hold a Caltex StarCard account, or have previously had a StarCard account that was permanently closed in the last 12 months.
Discounts on packaged engine oils and in-store purchases
Discounts are also available to cardholders on engine oils and most purchases in the convenience stores located in Caltex service stations. You’ll get 10% off packaged engine oils and 5% off most items purchased from a Caltex convenience store. It may not seem like much of a discount on a small purchase, but over time it could add up to a sizeable amount of saving for your business.
Caltex provides a list of purchase types which are NOT eligible for discounts. Major exclusions include cigarettes, lottery tickets and StarCash cards.
Earn Qantas Points on fuel and most in-store purchases
As well as getting a discount on fuel and other purchases, Caltex StarCard cardholders can also earn Qantas Frequent Flyer points on their purchases. They will earn:
The list of in-store purchases not eligible for Qantas Points earning is the same as the list on which discounts are not available.
Given that it should be possible to extract at least 1.0 cents of value from each Qantas point if redeemed wisely for flights and upgrades (and far more if used for Business Class flights), this effectively amounts to an extra discount of 1.0 cents or more on each litre of fuel purchased.
Qantas Business Rewards joining fee waived
Qantas Points earned will be credited to a Qantas Business Rewards program account. So in order to receive Qantas Points you must open, or already have, a Qantas Business Rewards program account. Points accumulated in a Qantas Business Rewards account can be used for the benefit of your business, or transferred at a later date to an individual’s Qantas Frequent Flyer points account (minimum transfer quantity of 3,000 Qantas points).
A Qantas Business Rewards joining fee of $89.50 normally applies, but this will be waived for Caltex StarCard customers.
Add more features to your card for an additional fee
Optional StarCard extras, for which additional monthly fees are payable, include discounts from Caltex partner servicing and repairs businesses (earn Qantas points on expenditure), national roadside assistance with unlimited callouts, and the inclusion of toll fees on your StarCard account via a Caltex toll tag.
It costs $2 per month per vehicle to add Services & Repairs, giving you access to up to 15% discount on service charges by vehicle manufacturers, dealerships and local mechanics. You’ll also earn 1.0 Qantas Points for every dollar you spend.
Roadside Assistance, with unlimited callouts and national 24/7 coverage, costs $5.25 per month per vehicle.
A road, bridge and tunnel tolls facility can be added to your card for an extra 50 cents per month per vehicle.
Convenient billing and less paperwork
Caltex provides StarCard customers with a single monthly invoice detailing all their fuel purchases. It’s also possible to access a range of other reports via the MyCaltex app. Customers who use Xero accounting software can also link their card directly to their accounting system.
Payment of invoices is made monthly by direct debit from the cardholder’s nominated bank account or credit card. It means that you’ll be getting a month’s interest-free credit on fuel and other Caltex purchases you make at the beginning of the billing cycle. But there’s no option to defer payment and pay interest on the balance. This is not a credit card.
It all adds up to convenience and efficiency, especially if your business has several vehicles whose fuel usage needs to be tracked.
Relatively small monthly fee
The Caltex StarCard is not a free service. By offering discounts and Qantas Points, Caltex are obviously hoping to win your loyalty and make you drive past other brands of service station in order to seek out one of theirs. But they also want to make sure you use your card in order to recoup the cost of the monthly fee you’ll pay, rather than letting it gather dust in your wallet.
At just $2.95 per month per card it adds up to $35.40 per year, far less than a typical credit card fee. Purchase just 60 litres of premium fuel per month and the fee is covered by discount and Qantas Points, making all further discounts and QFF points earned in that month totally free.
An almost painless way to save money on fuel and earn extra Qantas Points for your business
Any business running one or more vehicles, from an unincorporated sole trader enterprise to a medium-sized company, can save both money and time with a Caltex StarCard, coming out well ahead after the monthly fee is paid.
